May The Glow of Chanukah
Continue To Warm Your Lives
Throughout The Year

Message from the Head of School

Yesterday morning, my heart swelled with pride as our high school students participated in their culminating Tefilah experience. Juniors and seniors practiced their trop with great proficiency as they read from the Torah. Ninth and tenth-graders have been learning the meaning behind Shacharit (morning) prayers. They presented a synopsis of what they have learned this semester to parents who joined us for a wonderful morning of learning and prayer. In our traditional minyan, students Hila Sachs and Daniel Saslafsky presented Divrei Torah (words of Torah).

Many thanks to our Judaic Studies teachers for such excellent preparation.

Never have I been so sure about our strength, our commitment to standing strong for future generations, and our legacy. We are a strong people, having weathered storms and relished triumphs for more than 4,000 years. As I mentioned to you in my e-mailed letter on Wednesday, we must continue to stand together, united and strong, for years to come.

Shabbat Shalom, and Happy Chanukah
Karen Feller
Head of School

DKJA Was Cooking!

Thank you to all who joined us for the Kosher Cooking Demonstration & Tasting at the home of our gracious hosts Jill and Yori Galel.

Chef Sharon Glass (The Rachael Ray of South Africa) prepared seven of her own scrumptious recipes, which included very helpful hints and anecdotes. It was an amazing presentation followed by tastings. Due to the overwhelming success of the day, we are looking forward to making this an annual event!

We appreciate the generosity of those who brought auction items for our What’s Cooking Kosher Basket for the upcoming Benefit Ball. (We are still accepting cooking items, which you can bring to our School Office.)

If you are interested in purchasing cookbooks by Sharon Glass, please contact Hilary Arenstein at arensteinh@dkja.org or (561) 852-3310. Click here for more photos

Lower School Highlights

Kindergartners learned the letter BET and incorporated their new knowledge by creating a doll puppet, which was named BATYA in Hebrew. The students learned how to say Batya ochelet banana  (Batya eats a banana) to reinforce their understanding of the new letter.

Another highlight was acting out the story of
Chanukah with costumes and props!

Middle School Highlights

Exciting Egypt
Fifth-graders began their study of the ancient civilization of Egypt. Students embarked upon a journey down the Nile and will explore the Pyramids, hieroglyphic writing, Egyptian gods, goddesses, queens, and pharaohs. Each class will have the opportunity to mummify their own King Kluck. This is a very exciting time for us!

Teamwork + Competition = Success with Geometry
Eighth-graders had to opportunity to team up with ninth-grade math classes recently for a Geometry SAT Competition. Teams of three to five students worked on 25 questions each to practice for the upcoming SAT. First to finish was the team of Matthew Zweibel, Alan Koolik, Jason Jaroslavsky, and Melanie Berkowitz – scoring 20 correct answers. The eventual winner was a combined effort of Courtney Dable, Alex Jacob, Jordan Bernstein and Daniel Alboukrek – with an astounding 24 correct answers. A special prize went to the team of Greg Joseph, Yoni Bick, Jonathan Hurwitz and Axl Vinograd, for  best teamwork – scoring 22 points.

Students Had A Ball!
This week, a group of eighth-grade students had the opportunity to join high school students in their Ballroom Dance elective. The eighth-grader  are studying the 1920’s, and Mr. Marc Newman taught the students dances from this time period.  They had a blast doing the Charleston and the Foxtrot.

High School Highlights
At the Town Meeting on Friday, December 4, 2009, high school students heard from Cole Richman, who was accompanied by Shayna Newald, two representatives from Beit T'Shuvah in Los Angeles, California.

At the age of 12, Cole's drug use resulted in expulsion from a Texas military academy at which he excelled in school and sports. By 14, and in a public school in Southern California, he’d moved on to other drugs, including heroin. Now 24, sober, armed with a mission, and a certified counselor, Cole tells his powerful story with frankness and humor to teenagers and young adults all over the country, in Jewish day schools, in synagogues, and at Jewish camps. He is associated with Beit T’Shuvah, a residential treatment center helping individuals overcome addiction and a full-service congregation offering religious services, holiday celebrations, and study. The Integrative Recovery Model at Beit T'Shuvah is a unique blend of Jewish spirituality, cognitive behavioral therapy, a 12-step recovery philosophy, and the creative arts. Following the presentation at the Town Meeting, Cole and Shayna Newald met with junior and senior students from Judaic Studies classes to continue the discussion. Students found the presentation informative and engaging.

In addition to this presentation, ninth-grade students had the pleasure of visiting with DKJA alumna Dana Kandel ('09) as part of a mentoring program. Dana is spending a year in Israel before she continues her studies at Brandeis University. She shared the lessons she has learned being a Jewish teen. We look forward to having other seniors join us over the course of the year to share their Jewish experiences in college.

Today's Town Meeting centered around Chanukah. Brett Kaplan, Grayson Lapayover, Kevin Moore, and Alex Wexelman prepared a short video and game to enhance the gathering. Michael Kagan lighted the Chanukah candles and led students in brachot.
